Cub Scouts are boys aged 8-10.5 that meet on a Tuesday as a pack under the supervision of a trained team of leaders led by the Cub Scout Leader known as Akela. All leaders within the Cub Scout Pack have names taken from characters in the Jungle Book. The pack is divided into Sixes, normally no more than five, each named after a colour and led by a Cub called a Sixer and his second.
What do Cub Scouts Do?
Cub Scouting is based on a variety of themes such as having fun, making friends and trying new things but the most important part of Cub Scouting is participation. They do this by playing games, working together gaining skills and going on outings and visits. Whilst enjoying these activities Cubs will also be taking part in the Program, a seamless progression of training, activities, challenges and awards that cover everything that young people do in Scouting from age 6 to 25. The Balanced Program for Cub Scouts has its highest achievement The Chief Scout’s Silver Award.
A Balanced Program is one that draws on a number of activities from each of the program zones over a period of time. For Cub Scouts, the Program Zones are:
1. Outdoor Scouting, Fitness, Discovering the World Around You, Creative, Beliefs and Attitudes, Caring and Community and Global.
2. District and Inter-Scout Group activities such as Church and Promise Renewal Parade, Fun Splash, Mat Ball Competition, Chess Competition, The AGM, Fireworks and Social events and many joint meetings ensure all the Cub Scouts are made aware they belong to a much larger family of Scouts that extends throughout the World.
