Explorer Scouts, are young men and women aged 14-18. Three Explorers are elected once a year to form an Executive Committee, comprising a Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer. It is through this committee that the program, camp and other activities are organised. The aim of this autonomy with the Unit is to help teach some skill that would be useful in later life such as planning, organisation, accounting and budgeting. Explorer scouts come from a number of different scout groups but primarily Trinity Scout & Guide Group, 5th Sutton Scout Group, 1st North Sutton and 1st/16th Scout Group. Explorers welcomes scouts and non-scouts of mixed gender and faith, they welcome everybody regardless of religion, faith, ethnicities and culture.
What do Explorer Scouts Do?
The general theme of progressive training similar to that followed by the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts continues in the Explorer Scout Unit. They can gain moving-on awards, Activity badges, continue to raise their standards in four specific Staged Activity badges and join with the other sections to achieve Group Awards.
However, their participation recognition rather than a badge is a Certificate of Achievement, their Challenges are directly linked with the Bronze, Silver and Gold standards of the Duke of Edinburgh’s award scheme. With the Chief Scout’s Award either the Platinum, Diamond or the highest achievement in Scouting, the Queen’s Scout Award. However its not all training for awards, the explorers also do mountaineering, hiking, rock climbing, camping, canoeing, rifle shooting, archery, helping the local community, fund raising, helping the environment and most importantly having fun!
